Korean Spicy Braised Tofu

- 300 g firm tofu 1 package
- ½ tsp salt for seasoning tofu
For sauce
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp agave syrup (same amount of rice syrup & honey or 1 tsp sugar)
- ½ tbsp sesame oil
- ½ tsp toasted sesame seeds
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tbsp sliced green onion
- 1~2 tsp roughly chopped red chili pepper (Your favorite chili! Thai hot chilis or jalapenos would go well)
- black pepper powder to taste
To cook & garnish
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp sliced green onion for garnish
- ¼ tsp toasted sesame seeds for garnish
Slice tofu into 1.5cm(½ in.) thickness.
Put a piece of paper towel on a plate and put tofu on it. Sprinkle ½ tsp of salt on top. Let it sit for 5 min.
Mix "Sauce" ingredients together and stir well. Set aside.
Heat a coated pan over medium-high heat. Add 1 tbsp of vegetable oil.
Pat dry tofu and add to the pan.
Pan-fry both sides until golden brown(takes about 5 to 8 min.). Transfer the tofu back to the plate.
Heat the same pan over medium-high heat.
Pour in the sauce and reduce until it's half-reduced.
Add tofu back into the pan. Reduce the heat to low heat.
Braise with the sauce 1 min. on each side, until most of the sauce has incorporated with tofu.
Transfer onto a plate and garnish with some slices of green onion and toasted & crushed sesame seeds.
