Did you know? Seoul is a treasure box for plant-forward dining. So many restaurants and cafes celebrate fresh, seasonal ingredients and creative veggie dishes! Given Korean cuisine’s long history with plant-based cooking, it’s no surprise these places feel so authentic and inspiring. As a chef who loves sharing Korean food culture, I think these restaurants and bars are perfect for anyone curious about Korean plant-focused meals. Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, or just in the mood to try something new, these five picks will give your taste buds a delightful adventure!

1. Balwoo Gongyang (발우공양)

Balwoo Gongyang, located next to Jogyesa Temple, embodies the principles of Korean temple cuisine, where the philosophy of mindful eating takes center stage. The food is prepared avoiding the pungent ingredients like garlic and onions, but focusing instead on clean, balanced flavors derived from fresh, seasonal local produce and fermented foods.

Insider’s Story: Balwoo Gongyang means “proper offering” and reflects the Buddhist tradition of treating every meal as a sacred act. The restaurant’s setting next to Jogyesa Temple enhances the mindful aspect of the dining experience. The dishes in the set menus differ by season. My absolute favorite season to visit this restaurant is in Spring, when foraged namul (edible wild greens) from mountains and fields fill the table. Reservations are a must!

💵 Price: Set menus start at ₩30,000 ($25)

The restaurant serves strictly vegan dishes.

2. A Flower Blossom on the Rice (꽃, 밥에 피다)

Tucked away in the back alley of Insa-dong, the historic neighborhood in Jongno district, A Flower Blossom on the Rice offers a dining experience that connects health-conscious eating with beautiful, organic ingredients. The restaurant was one of the first restaurants in Seoul to get a Michelin Green Star. By working closely with farms that adhere to eco-friendly and organic practices, it ensures that every dish not only nourishes but also supports a more sustainable food system. My personal favorite is their signature dish, Bojagi Bibimbap.
